Let’s talk about Gallium Iodide lamps. If you’re working with industrial inks and coatings, you know the struggle of getting that perfect cure. We build these lamps to hit a very specific sweet spot in the UV spectrum—right between 300nm and 400nm. That’s the exact energy your photoinitiators need to actually kick in and do their job. The problem with “skinning” If you’ve ever used standard mercury lamps, you might have run into a frustrating issue: the surface looks dry, but the bottom is still tacky. It’s called “skinning,” and it’s a nightmare for quality control. Gallium iodide fixes this by focusing on longer UV wavelengths. Instead of just hitting the surface and stopping, the light actually penetrates deep into the coating. You get a solid, full cure from the top all the way down to the substrate. No more guessing if the base is actually dry. The nuts and bolts We don’t cut corners on the hardware. These things run hot—really hot. To stop the glass from cracking under that kind of thermal stress, we use high-purity fused quartz. We also spec the electrodes to handle those constant start-stop cycles so you aren’t replacing bulbs every other week. But here is the catch:you need to keep them cool. Whether you’re using air or water cooling, make sure your system can actually handle the wattage. If your cooling is too weak, the quartz overheats. Once that happens, the light spectrum shifts and your lamp’s lifespan plummets. Putting them to work You’ll mostly find these on high-speed lines, especially in automotive coatings or textile printing. It’s where the chemistry is picky and demands a specific trigger. If you’re swapping these into your current setup, just double-check your ballast. The voltage and amperage have to match up perfectly.
