
Getting Your UV Curing Right with Gallium Iodide Lamps
Standard mercury vapor lamps are fine for some things, but they don’t cut it for everything. That’s where Gallium Iodide (GaI) comes in. We build these lamps to hit a different part of the spectrum—specifically for those times you’re dealing with thick coatings or photoinitiators that just won’t trigger without longer UV wavelengths. Essentially, it’s about getting the light to penetrate deeper so the cure actually happens throughout the material, not just on the surface.
The Technical Stuff (Simplified)
Most of our GaI lamps live in that 300nm to 400nm sweet spot. We tweak the gallium levels and the thickness of the quartz to get the peak exactly where you need it. But here is the thing:wattage is a balancing act. If you run it too low, your parts come off the conveyor under-cured and tacky. Too high? You’ll scorch your substrate. It’s a tight window. To help with that, we make custom lengths that slide right into your existing reflectors. This keeps the UV flux focused right on the part, where it belongs.
Heat and Hardware
These lamps run hot. Really hot. We use high-purity synthetic quartz so the tubes don’t get that cloudy “solarized” look after a few hundred hours. But you have to make sure your cooling blowers can actually handle the heat that GaI chemistry kicks out. If the tube overheats, the internal pressure spikes and you’ll fry your electrodes way sooner than you should. To stop that from happening during those annoying rapid start-stop cycles, we use reinforced end-caps. They handle the thermal expansion so the lamp doesn’t give up on you.
Keeping the Line Moving
If you’re running a “hot-seller” product line, you know the feeling. One lamp pops, and the whole floor grinds to a halt. It’s a nightmare. We hate that as much as you do.
